Schedule Around Nap and Energy Time
This is the single most impactful thing you can do. A well-rested child at a session is a completely different experience from a tired one. Think about when your kids are typically at their best and book your session for that window. For most toddlers that is mid-morning after breakfast or late afternoon after a nap. Avoid scheduling over nap time to fit a session in. The photos will show the difference. In warmer markets like Atlanta, Houston, and Miami, late afternoon sessions also have the advantage of cooler temperatures and better light, which is a double win.
Let Them Move
Some of the best family photos happen when kids are in motion. Running toward mom, being tossed in the air by dad, chasing a sibling across a field, jumping off a bench. Sparq photographers know how to capture movement and they lean into it rather than fighting it. If your toddler will not stand still, that is not a problem. Tell your photographer and they will work with the motion rather than against it. The candid running-and-laughing shot is often the one that ends up on the wall.
Skip the Cheese, Use Prompts Instead
Asking kids to say cheese produces exactly the kind of stiff fake grin you are trying to avoid. Sparq photographers use games, silly questions, tickles, and movement prompts to get genuine reactions. Things like telling your kid there is a bug on dad's head, asking them to whisper a secret in mom's ear, or doing a family countdown before a big jump. These are not tricks exactly, they are just ways of creating real moments rather than performed ones. Let your photographer lead and resist the urge to direct your kids yourself during the session.
Build in a Buffer for the Warm-Up
Most kids need a few minutes to warm up to a new environment and a camera in their face. Arriving a few minutes early and letting kids explore the location before the session starts makes a real difference. Do not expect great shots in the first two minutes. The best images often come from the middle and end of the session once everyone has relaxed. This is especially true in busy urban locations like Chicago, New York, and Atlanta where there is a lot for kids to take in.
Lower the Pressure on Yourself
Meltdowns happen. Grass stains happen. Snot happens. Someone will cry at some point and it will probably not ruin anything. The families who consistently end up with the photos they love most are the ones who come in relaxed and ready to just be themselves. Sparq photographers work with whatever the day brings. A tantrum mid-session does not mean the session is over. It usually means a short break and then some of the most genuine and beautiful moments of the whole shoot.
